Rochester, NY: The 2017 Semifinalist Watch List for the James D. Ulrich Award (College Male Athlete of the Year - non-Division 1 Schools) is presented below. All athletes listed on this watch list and the Others Considered list all competed at the 2017 NCAA Division III National Outdoor Championship meet and / or earned All-American status during either the Cross Country, Indoor, or Outdoor seasons during this school year.

The members of 10 person watch list come from eight colleges and universities. They each achieved All-American status in their respective events at the 2017 NCAA Division III National Outdoor Championships. The 15 athletes on the Others Considered list, who have also all qualified for the 2017 NCAA Division III National Outdoor Championships come from eight schools. Between the two lists, eleven colleges and universities are represented.

Cortland State has three athletes on this watch list while Alfred University, Brockport State, Geneseo State, RIT, Oswego Stste, St. John Fisher College, Utica College each have one athlete on this watch list. Cortland State has six athletes on the Others Considered list while Brockport State has four. Buffalo State, Fredonia State, Geneseo State, RIT, and St. John Fisher College each has one.

This version of the watch list reflects the performances through the end of the 2017 Outdoor season and takes into account the results of the 2017 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships. This is the final James D. Ulrich Award watch list for the 2016-2017 school year.

The finalists for this award will be determined from this watch list.

The finalists for all eight awards will be guests at our Annual Awards Banquet.

The winner of all eight of Niagara Track & Field Hall of Fame annual awards are selected by the same panel of area coaches, participants, and nationally-based historians and statisticians.

The 2017 Annual Awards winners will be announced at the 2017 Niagara Track & Field Hall of Fame Awards Banquet to be held at the Radisson – Rochester Airport in Rochester, NY, located near the RIT campus, on Saturday, September 9, 2017.

About the James D. Ulrich Award

The James D. Ulrich Award, which debuted in 2012, is presented annually by the Niagara Track & Field Hall of Fame to the outstanding Male College Athlete of the Year from other than NCAA Division I Colleges in or from the Niagara Association.

James D. Ulrich, a member of the Hall of Fame's Class of 2011, who is a former head track and field coach at Fredonia State where he coached five NCAA Division 3 National Champions. His teams won the New York State Collegiate Track and Field Conference (NYSCTFC) Men's Track & Field Championship 14 times Indoors and 13 times Outdoors; the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men's Track & Field Champions 14 times Indoors and 21 times (including 20 consecutive) Outdoors. Ulrich, who is highly decorated, was named the SUNYAC Coach of the Year thirteen times, NYSCTFA Coach of the Year eight times, NCAA Division III Regional Coach of the Year five times, and received the SUNYAC Service Award.

About the Niagara Track & Field Hall of Fame Annual Awards

The Niagara Track & Field Hall of Fame Annual Awards program was developed to bring some well deserved recognition to the outstanding high school and college athletes and teams, and the top high school coach from the Niagara Association. These awards are presented at our annual awards banquet which is held on the Saturday after Labor Day.

The finalists (top 3) are selected from the lists of semifinalists by a panel of area coaches, participants, and nationally-based historians and statisticians. The finalists for all eight awards will be guests at our Annual Awards Banquet.

About the Niagara Track & Field Hall of Fame

Niagara Track & Field Hall of Fame and Virtual Museum is provisionally chartered by the Regents of the University of the State of New York. The purpose of the Niagara Track & Field Hall of Fame and Virtual Museum is to recognize those individuals who made significant and outstanding contributions to the Sport of Athletics (including Track & Field, Long Distance Running, Race Walking, and Cross Country Running) while living within the geographic boundaries (New York State West of and including the counties of Oswego, Onondaga, Cortland, and Broome) of the Niagara Association as athletes (including Masters), coaches, and/or administrators (including Competition Officials).
